Another day, another hospital visit

This time to check on Alexander.
I am getting to know my way around Auckland Hospital now.
Alex will have his left arm cast off in 2 weeks.
He is not to do PE or vigorous activities for another 8 weeks (from today).
The wrist is healing well.
The wire in his right elbow is holding well.
Needs to keep away from vigorous activity, however.
The waiting time at hospitals can be unbelievable.
At least at Starship they have TVs everywhere.
A little boy next to me had a book on ants.
When he left for his appointment I picked it up.
Did you know that carpenter and army ants don't build nests - they build bivouacs, using themselves as the walls and ceiling!
Amazing....

  1. No rock climbing or... caving... for him for 8 weeks? [Shudder.]

  2. no.
    walking, yes.
anything where his arms are not in jeopardy.
i think the nurse said it will be about 30 months for his elbow to come back up to speed...

  3. That's two and a half years. That's sobering.

  4. I think I heard it right.
He will be able to do stuff...just won't have the same range of flexibility for quite a while.
Still, he is proving to be amazingly adaptable.

  5. How mean! You mean you "borrowed" (stole) that boy's book without even asking? Did he realise?

  6. He wasn't there at the time, and although he said it was his book, he was only small - he left it behind. It belonged to the waiting room I suspect.

  7. Dad you're completely stuffing it up. It was eighteen, 18, one-eight, months.

  9. But a whole year sooner that you'll be able to fly a flexifoil! (If you had tried today it would have ripped your hands off.)

  10. That's my stunt kite that looks like a flying Lilo. In a strong wind it can drag me along the ground, whether I'm sitting, standing or lying.

  11. Is it anything like paraglider?
The Hofmanns are trying out their paraglider this weekend down on their Te Kauwhata farm.

  12. It's sort of like a small version with a single tapering spar instead of lots of lines keeping the shape of the aerofoil. My one is 6 foot long; my brother has two 8 footers and one 6 footer and flies them all at once. He goes grass skating (in ordinary shoes) in moderately light winds.

  13. Sounds like a sufficiently challenging outdoor pursuit - also potentially complicated. One that I'd be happy to watch...
