ABBA

Abba are groovy, funky and cool.
30 years on their music is as fresh as it was when first made.
The key to success?
Great tunes.
Sometimes the lyrics are, let's face it, on the naff side of Eurovision.
What is Fernando actually about????
Answers on the back of a postcard...
And is there anybody out there actually named Chiquitita????
I am sure that given another decade, ABBA would have found themselves failing literacy standards at NCEA level whatever....
But the TUNES...clever, catchy, sufficiently challenging...
They give Mozart's melodies a run for their money (, money, money...)

I think Fernando was tied into an event in S America.
Mozart tunes are better but require 15 yrs training to sing them properly and are required to advance the drama.

  2. ABBA tunes are not that easy to sing, either!

Which event in South America (so many to choose from!!)?

Not all Mozart tunes are subservient to the dramatic purpose of opera.

More to follow but now time to help with dinner!

  4. Ah - Fernando. Dewey's Table Dance in that Malcolm in the Middle episode has to rate as one of the all time greatest Malcolm in the Middle scenes.

But anyway, since you ask, I looked up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_(song)#English_language_version ...

"The English version, with re-written lyrics by Ulvaeus, present a vision of nostalgia for two veterans reminiscing in old age about a war of liberation that they participated in during their younger days. Their reference to "the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande" appears to tie the setting to the Mexican Revolution, which began when Francisco Madero led an armed band across the border from Texas on November 20, 1910, to overthrow the 34 year dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz."
