We will miss you Gerald. What a legacy you have left, all those students transformed, an amazing family, the memories. God bless you and your family. May God hold you all at this time.
It is very sad that our friend of 40 years has passed away - he will be greatly missed. It will seem strange not to check his blog each day but it has been a real inspiration. We know Gerald is now in a better place - Hallelujah. Love and hugs to you all. I an praying that you will feel God's loving arms around you giving strength and support at this time. Coralie
I was honoured to be able to share this journey with Gerald and his family. I saw him leave the world today, it was moving, peaceful and very special. I have learnt so much, and been humbled, by a humble man. Thank you Gerald for allowing me to be a part of your life, I will miss you. See you when I get there…. God Bless you.
Godspeed Gerald: I hope the melody is soaring -"O weiter, stiller Frieder. So tief im Abendrot, Wie sind wir wandermüde - Ist dies etwa der Tod?" Eichendorff Kia Kaha Lois, Alex, Sophie. Diana
Our sympathy to you and your family. Gerald lived a generous life and gave much those he came in contact with. I'm pleased I was able to make a brief contact with him in July when I was back in NZ.
What a tremendous loss. Gerald was a wonderful man, very generous of spirt. Lois, thank you for sharing Gerald's and your "journey" ~ that overused term but very apt in this case. Know that Gerald's many many friends in PPTA are sending you, Alex and Sophie our aroha and support. Sue McVeigh
Thinking of you all. Your blog has been inspiring and uplifting, and a message to us all on the importance of our families, friends and living each day to the full. Blessings on you at this difficult time. Alison, Colin and Sarah-Ann.
"When the day that he must go hence was come many accompanied him to the River side, into which, as he went, he said, 'Death, where is thy sting?' And as he went down deeper, he said, 'Grave, where is thy victory?' So he passed over, and the trumpets sounded for him on the other side."
His pilgrimage is over and the music goes silent -- but at his bidding not for long.
All thoughts with you from one who remembers a fine friend and colleague.
This man wanted to live...not for himself but .. for his family.. for his friends.. for those he came in contact with. What a man. What an inspiration.
Dear Lois, Alexander and Sophie. What a courageous journey you have all been on - and one which you will continue to travel. My heartfelt condolences...Gerald was a very special man - a blessing in the lives of all he knew. May God richly bless you all and hold you fast and comforted at this time. Love and hugs Shona
Thanks, Gerald, for showing us all how to die, with good humour and honesty and grace. Thanks Lois, for sharing with us your love, your pain Our hearts go out to you, Sophie and Alex, and all who have walked closely with you these last months. "You who mourn will be comforted You who hunger will hunger no more All the last shall be first Of this I am sure
You who weep now will laugh again All you lonely be lonely no more Yes, the last will be first Of this I'm sure" Brooke Fraser, Flags
Oh my brother ... how I so dearly wish I had found this blog before today. So that I could have shared the love in my heart I have carried for you, inert and silent, but ne'er waning, for 25 years without expression.
As teenagers, you were Lennon to my McCartney, Judd to my Finn, Cale to my Reed. My soul brother. Sharing , as only teenage boys can, unfettered passion for all things Kubrick, Cale and Eno. Playing 45s of the Pistols and LPs of Split Enz and Tom Waits and The Beatles and Bowie and VU for hours in blissful silence --
You rescued me from the cultural desert of 70s suburbia and took me to an island of two, a place we could dream, sing, play guitar and make up songs together : Mulgan St.
My wish for my own teenage son is that he has a friend now like I had in you, Gerald.
We were destined it seems to share only our childhoods, and our awkward metamorphosis from boys to young men. We couldn't carry our relationship into adulthood. So, my brother, we haven't spoken for 25 years. But I have never forgotten you. You have been, and will always be, a part of me.
The "Dawn Chorus" at the end of terms will never be the same again. How we will miss those amazing tunes and lyrics. And how much more Lois and the girls will miss you, too.You headed an awesome department and the results spoke for themselves. On top of which, you worked unpaid for our collective welfare thru the PPTA branch. You hung on to that faith which we know you had and are now reunited with eternity.Gerald, my friend. You left too early. A gentleman, a scholor, a loving father and caring colleague, a master musician. VIA CONDIOS.
Transitions -- seem like a good idea... I feel such celebration of a life lived well and fully, spreading joy and frivolity, and so much appreciation in these last months. And I feel such love for you 3 remaining, as you each and all finally embark on the next chapter. Can't wait to see you all again, and to see where you are heading. Love, love, love.
missyou looooads sir! you were a true inspiration to all those who were lucky to have met you or know you. my prayers & thoughts go out to yr family! see you tmrw.
Gone, but never forgotten! VWBZ will rock on fr YOU sir. Love always, Losa Iakopo. XO.
So sorry I wasn't able to make it to the funeral today as I was at a conference in Pamerston North. My love and sympathy to you, Lois, Sophie and Alex.
Thank you, Gerald, for being such a great friend during our teenage years in Mulgan St - playing together in Lynfield College orchestra, chamber music, choir, dramatic and musical productions, debating teams, etc.
Thanks for being the first living composer I met, and for demonstrating that music is not just for the elite and famous, but the birth right of all. I relished our conversations on philospohy, politics and faith - and how, even then, you were always giving music, film and book reviews.
Thank you for never fitting the mould, for expanding my world, for being a blessing and a "soul friend". Until that greater reunion.....
Loved your service last week - a sublime blend of music, laughter, tears and joy. A very Gerald event. You would have been so proud of Sophie -- and the VeeDuBees.
It's clear you've left a lasting legacy to all who knew you.
My personal example: on Saturday my band played some songs for you as part of a gig we had on Ponsonby Rd:
Velvet Underground's "There She goes Again",( which I heard for the first time at Mulgan St in 1975 as you passionately demonstrated to me just how rock and roll a viola could sound.) Bowie's "Five Years" from one of our favourite albums Ziggy Stardust ( and "Queen Bitch" from Hunky Dory) and Brian Eno's "Needle in a Camel's Eye" from his great album Here Come the Warm Jets.
Think you also would've liked our version of Coney Island Baby and Nick Cave's People Aint No Good.
So much of my musical inspiration comes from those Mulgan St days spent with you, my brother. It was a setlist we could've written together, for our first band "Shirtmania" all those years ago.
Mr V! Well well well, you never did like me calling you that after I had left Otahuhu College(05) lol but I just couldnt seem to say gerald it seemed so grown up! I know your in a much better place! I just thought i'd say that i've been thinking about you alot these past few days as I undergo my music teaching placement at Aorere College. I think of all the fond memories we shared as student/teacher/musician and most importantly friends thanks for inspiring me to keep on going with music! I hope I can share that inspiration to the students I will teach Love Anne-Marie Lalakai
Mr Van Waardenberg, How fondly you are remembered by pupils for your short time at Hugh Christie School, Tonbridge UK in the 90's, your wonderfully warming prescence. You inspired so many of us. I still remember you reclining on a chair in the middle of the school field playing your guitar during the sponsored walk, your unbelievably huge locks blowing in the wind, while I got blisters from wearing the wrong shoes, walking miles that day. Rest in peace.
Mr V! I know you hated me calling you that After I had finished high school but calling you Gerald felt so strange. I always think about you and how you inspired me throughout my college years, you made my life exciting and made me want to attend school everyday and I thank you so much for that. Even though it has been 8 years since you’ve past on I still think about you all the time and my throat swells up just thinking about it. I hope you’ve found peace where you are and just know you are missed so much by everyone you’ve left here on Earth xoxoxo always thinking of you and the happiness you created through your existence xoxox
Thank you for opening your heart and mind the past two years, and in the process opening other hearts and minds.
