Harry Belafonte

On the stereo today.
A Best Of CD.
A golden honey voice.
Dripping with warmth of tone.
A seductive comfort.
A virile, energised singer when young.
A politicised, resolute hero when older.
Day-o, Jamaica Farewell.
Never has Venezuela had such catchy treatment as in "Ma-tilda".
This is music to cheer and stimulate.

  2. Christine, your HB confession is wonderful!
Music can transcend barriers of age, gender, ethnicity, etc. like nothing else.
On the other hand, it can also define cultural boundaries.
I think you are studying ethnomus at uni (well chosen!) - you may have come across the exam question "Music is a universal language - discuss" (stage 2??) - I remember the lecture in which Prof McLean described a close encounter between Bach (reel-to-reel tape) and an Aboriginal tribe - total bemusement and lack of reference - HOWEVER, I recently heard (on BBC world service - where else ?) the Bach Cello Suites arranged by a West African percussion ensemble - so there are certainly Universal Principles that govern Music (remember the Elements?)...
Belafonte, Elvis, country - less than 6 degrees of separation there (and of course Country covers a multitude of things!!)...
    Rock on, Christine!

Also a shout out to Peter B, who has the increasingly rare privilege of having seen HB live somewhere...
